Geneive Abdo

Geneive Abdo [1] is an American journalist who has covered "numerous Islamic countries for over a decade."[2]

She was the correspondent in Iran for The Guardian starting in 1998 before "slipping out" of the country with her husband in February 2001 under threat of arrest for "publishing fabrications and distortions" in an interview with Akbar Ganji, in which Ganji warned "of a possible social explosion in Iran in reaction to the theological `fascism`" in Iran.[3] Starting in 2002 she was a United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, liaison officer.

She has served as a regular contributor to The Economist magazine and The International Herald Tribune.[2] From 1992-1993, she was the Middle East correspondent for The Dallas Morning News, based in Cairo and from 1990–1992, she worked as a correspondent based in Moscow for Reuters. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe[4]

She was married to journalist Jonathan Lyons.
